I Am the Lord

“The LORD descended in the cloud and stood there with him as he called upon the name of the LORD. 6Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in loving kindness and truth; 7who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.” 8Moses made haste to bow low toward the earth and worship. 9He said, “If now I have found favor in Your sight, O Lord, I pray, let the Lord go along in our midst, even though the people are so obstinate, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us as Your own possession.” (Exodus 34:5-9)

How well do you know God? Most people who believe in God think of Him only as this loving, caring, giving God who expects little of us and accepts almost any kind of behavior in which we engage. Nothing could be further from the truth. God is loving, kind, merciful, and forgiving to be sure, but He is also a God of wrath. Hebrews 10:31 says “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” In the passage of scripture under consideration today God made it clear to Moses that He would be forgiving and merciful to those who would submit to His will. But at the same time He pointed out how He would punish those who disobeyed Him. Heaven is waiting for those who obey God and live according to His will. Eternal damnation is waiting for the disobedient who insist on living according to their own desire.
