Living in a Strange Land

So Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and charged him, and said to him, “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. 2″Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father; and from there take to yourself a wife from the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother. 3″May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples. 4″May He also give you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your descendants with you, that you may possess the land of your sojournings, which God gave to Abraham.” 5Then Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau. (Genesis 28:1-5)
Since Esau sought Jacob’s life and it was also time for Jacob to take a wife, Isaac sent Jacob to find his wife among the daughter’s of Rebekah’s brother, Laban. Jacob would spend many years in this strange land living with his relatives.
I have been privileged to travel overseas a few times in my life and it is a wonderful but somewhat uneasy experience. The beds are smaller, the food is very different, and of course there is the language barrier. It is difficult not being able to ask for things you need because of speaking a different language than those in whose country you are visiting. I remember my mother saying, “Be it ever so humble there’s no place like home” every time we went away for a period of time. It is true there is no place like home. It is our place of refuge. It is where we are most comfortable and secure. It’s “home”.
Did you know this world is not our home? We are told in the Bible that heaven is our ultimate if we allow Jesus to save us from our sins. A place of magnificence, of pearly gates, and golden streets. Of course these are just a means of helping us understand that heaven is so sublime we surely do not want o miss it. The apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in the church at Colossae to “set your affections on things above and not on things of this earth.” (Colossians 3:1-2)
I would like to invite you to visit in our worship assembly and hear about God’s will and how you can live forever in those mansions Jesus told His apostles about as we read in John 14:1-3. We will do nothing to embarrass you and you will not be asked to give any money. Also, I have a sermon entitled, “God’s Description of Heaven” on CD that is FREE of charge and just by filling out the request form below. May God bless you in your study of His word.
