Living in the Shadows of Others

“Now when they set out from Kadesh, the sons of Israel, the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor. 23Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor by the border of the land of Edom, saying, 24“Aaron will be gathered to his people; for he shall not enter the land which I have given to the sons of Israel, because you rebelled against My command at the waters of Meribah. 25“Take Aaron and his son Eleazar and bring them up to Mount Hor; 26and strip Aaron of his garments and put them on his son Eleazar. So Aaron will be gathered to his people, and will die there.” 27So Moses did just as the LORD had commanded, and they went up to Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation. 28After Moses had stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on his son Eleazar, Aaron died there on the mountain top. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain. 29When all the congregation saw that Aaron had died, all the house of Israel wept for Aaron thirty days.”

Aaron lived in the shadow of Moses his whole life as recorded in the Bible. It was Moses God chose to lead Israel out of Egyptian bondage despite the fact that Moses had a speech problem and Aaron was actually the one who spoke to Pharaoh. Aaron was chosen by God to be the first High Priest but even that seems to pale when compared to the role Moses played in Israel’s history. When Moses tarried 40 days on Mt. Sinai, Aaron was chosen by the people to lead them back to Egypt. He gave into their demands and fashioned a golden calf to represent God. Aaron and his sister Miriam criticized the leadership of Moses and was punished by God for their insolence. It’s not easy to live in the shadow of others.

That is what is so great about being a Christian. In Christ we are all one. No one is more important than another. God shows no partiality in His dealings with mankind. He loves everyone and gave His Son to die for everyone. It is a great blessings to know you are a child of God and have heaven waiting for you when life on earth is over.
