Standing on Holy Ground

“Now Moses was pasturing the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2The angel of the LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed. 3So Moses said, “I must turn aside now and see this marvelous sight, why the bush is not burned up.” 4When the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5Then He said, “Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” 6He said also, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Then Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.”
One of the tragedies of our day is the lack of reverence for God in people’s lives. Even in the worship assemblies, people seem to be more concerned about their comfort than how they can reverence for God. Before God revealed anything of His will for Moses He instructed Moses to remove his sandals from his feet and come no closer. The reason for these instructions was that the ground was “holy ground”. What made it holy was the fact that God was present there. Without God’s presence it was just another mountain nothing special at all. It wasn’t until Moses complied with God’s requirements for being in His presence did begin to communicate His will to Moses. We are told to “Be still and know I am God”. (Psalm 46:10) Throughout the Bible we see how God demands our reverence and respect for Him. Our worship to God should show forth our reverence for Him and who He is. The way we dress should reflect a recognition of how special it is to come into His presence in the worship assembly. We live in a very casual society. It used to be that people dressed up to go to funerals as a matter of respect for the family of the deceased. That is not the case so much now.
