And the Lord Was With Him

Jacob loved Joseph more than his other sons because he was born to him in his old age by his beloved wife Rachel. Joseph’s brothers hated him even more when their father made a coat of many colors and with long sleeves and gave it to Joseph. Their hatred for Joseph grew even greater as he told them of a dream he had where they all bowed down to him. On one occasion Jacob sent Joseph to check on his brothers. As Joseph approached them they conspired to kill him but Reuben, the eldest of the brothers, convinced them to throw Joseph into a dry well. As some Midianite trades were passing by they sold Joseph to them and he was taken to Egypt. There Joseph was sold into slavery. He was bought by a man named Potiphar, an officer of the king of Egypt and the captain of the palace guard. Potiphar soon recognized that the God of Joseph was highly blessing him so he made him head over all his household. Even though he was a slave Joseph was put into a position of authority. As we begin to follow Joseph’s life in Egypt one phrase will be repeated several time: “and the Lord was with him”.
One of the great promises we have from God is He will always be with us as His children. But one cannot become a child of God unless they are willing to obey God’s plan of salvation. The Bible teaches us that we must have faith in Jesus as God’s Son. That faith comes from hearing God’s word. (Romans10:17) But believing in Jesus as God’s Son is not enough. We are told in James 2:19 that, “the devils also believe and tremble”. That faith must be acted upon in further obedience to God’s divine will. We must repent of our sins for Jesus Himself said, I tell you, no, except you repent, you will all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:3) In addition to faith and repentance one must confess Jesus as the Son of God. We read about this in Acts 8:37. Finally, one must be baptized for the remission of sin according to Romans 6:1-6 and Acts 2:38.
