In Genesis 11:1-9 we read of the Tower of Babel wherein God confused the language of the people to accomplish His will that the people would spread out over the earth. The people had decided to build a large tower that would reach high into the sky and there they would stay and make a name for themselves. God confused their language and they were scattered as He desired.
Today, there are literally thousands of different religious organizations, many of them claiming to be Bible believing people. The religious world of denominational division is no more in harmony with God’s will than the people who proposed to build the Tower of Babel and remain in one spot in direct contradiction to God’s will.
In John 17:20-23 we read, “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; 21that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22″The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one;23I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me.” Jesus prayed that all those who believed in Him as the Son of God would be of one mind. We are told in Ephesians 4:5 that just as there is only one Lord there is one faith, and that faith comes from hearing God’s word (Romans 10:17). If there is one faith that comes from hearing God’s word, how can there be all these different denominations claiming to be following the Bible? The apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 4:17 wrote that he taught the same thing in every church in the New Testament era. What he taught in Rome, he taught in Ephesus. What he taught in Colossae, he taught in Thessalonica, etc. The great division among believers comes from the fact that the different denominations have their various “creed books” written by men that state their articles of faith and separate them from other religious organizations.
First century Christians were of the same mind and same judgment, because they followed the teachings of the apostles who were guided by the Holy Spirit.
